THE MERMAID

 

            Unearthly creature, half fish, half fallen angel, neither beautiful nor ugly. Wherever your wild and wandering song leads me, I must follow…

 

            Based largely on The Mermaid of Zennor story, this show was devised by its four performers along with director Peter Frankham. The story of a mermaid’s love for a mortal man - Matty Trewella, the best singer in his village – was woven together with magic and mystery, music hall routines, song, comedy, shadow puppetry and acrobatics.

 

            Now I feel it is my duty

            To inform you of one beauty

            In the rare and joyful moonlight

            She calls to me cold and wild

            Though I own she is a creature

            Of character and feature

            No words can paint a picture

            Of the Ocean’s Dancing Child

 

            And if you could have seen her there

            Boys, if you had just been there

            The deep sea’s heartbeat in her eyes

            ‘Twas morning when she smiled

            At her song so wild and tender

            The stars would heaven surrender

            For one glimpse of nature’s brightest prize
