Magic, mystery and music’

The Cornishman

Described by its director, Matthew Smith, as ‘dramatic, comedic, surrealist’, this untraditional re-telling of the old romance created a world in which past and present collided bizarrely!

Cherry lives with her parents in an overcrowded driftwood shack on the shoreline. Every day, Cherry is sent out by her parents to beach comb, whilst they re-live their ballroom days of old. Cherry longs for a beautiful dress and a life of excitement – and to eat something other than fish and potatoes. The arrival of her stuck up cousin Sophia (who can talk French and everything) starts Cherry wondering whether her means of escape might also be to go ‘en service’ with a family further up country…

At a crossroads she meets a mysterious man called Robin, who just happens to be looking for someone to look after his young son. Little does Cherry realise what strange adventures await her in the form of magic ointment, love, jealousy, suspicion, Robin’s ghostly wife, some distinctly odd sailors – not to mention the seriously disturbing Aunt Prudence.
